Arizona Drivers Paying Nearly 60 Cents More Per Gallon Than the Rest of the Country

Gas prices are climbing once again in Arizona, catching drivers off guard and fueling a new debate among state lawmakers. With costs rising sharply in recent days, many Arizonans are questioning why they keep hearing talk of prices going down when their wallets say otherwise.

During a state committee discussion this week, Representative Cesar Aguilar (D-AZ) voiced what many residents have noticed.

“Members, I was at the gas station just yesterday and I think gasoline went up 30 cents,” Aguilar said. “I keep hearing that gasoline is going down, but it doesn’t feel that way when people are filling up their tanks, especially this week.”

Representative Kevin Volk (R-AZ) pointed out the difference between crude oil markets and what consumers experience at gas stations.

“This week, I just want to clarify, Representative Aguilar, you talked about stopping at the gas station like a regular Arizonan. You do not buy gas by the barrel of crude oil, is that correct?” he asked. “I do not buy crude oil. And I think most Arizonans don’t buy crude oil.”

Representative Aaron Márquez (D-AZ) added historical context, noting that Arizona previously had an oil and gas commission that found local refinery projects unfeasible.

“Are you aware there is one deposit and refinery on the Navajo Nation?” he asked. “Mr. Chair, are you aware that the state once examined the issue and found no feasibility for additional petroleum refineries in Arizona?”

The session concluded when Representative Oscar De Los Santos (D-AZ) made a political remark, saying, “It’s five simple words: Trump is raising gas prices.”

Current Prices

Outside the Capitol, data backs the rising costs.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Arizona jumped more than 50 cents in recent days, reaching about $4.11 as of Monday, almost 60 cents above the national average of $3.45, according to AAA.

Analysts blame a combination of global and seasonal factors.

The ongoing conflict in Iran has driven crude oil prices to more than $100 a barrel, while disruptions in a key Middle Eastern shipping channel have strained supply. Additionally, the annual switch to summer-blend gasoline, a cleaner but more expensive fuel, has added further upward pressure.

For now, Arizona drivers are left to wonder: how long will they be paying some of the highest prices in the country at the pump?
