Representatives Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and David Schweikert (R-AZ) condemned the failure of a House resolution disclosing sexual harassment and misconduct reports by members of Congress on social media.
Last week, Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) announced on X that she and Representative Tim Burchett (R-TN) were supporting Representative Nancy Mace's (R-SC) resolution demanding that the House Ethics Committee release any and all reports of sexual misconduct or relationships with staff.
"If you sexually harass someone in Congress, you do not get to hide behind closed doors," Rep. Mace said in a statement, referencing the mounting evidence against Representative Tony Gonzales (R-TX) and his alleged affair with a staffer who later committed suicide via self-immolation.
"The American people deserve answers. Staff deserve answers. Women deserve answers. No more protection for predators in Congress. We are going to shine a light on every single one of them," Rep. Mace added.
However, an overwhelming majority of the House voted against the resolution, with the final vote tally of 65 in favor and 357 against.
Reps. Biggs and Schweikert voiced their disappointment on social media.
"The American people deserve full transparency from their elected officials, and I have continually voted to hold Members of Congress to the standards worthy of our positions of trust," Rep. Biggs posted. "Yesterday, I voted to release all information of sexual misconduct and harassment occurring within Congress, but unfortunately, we did not have the votes to make this happen."
Rep. Biggs vowed to "continue pushing for transparency and the highest standards for those who serve in these hallowed halls."
Rep. Schweikert similarly posted that the vote "showed exactly how broken this place is."
"The House had a chance to shine a light on years of secret harassment cases. Instead a large bipartisan majority chose secrecy and buried it in committee so that the public won't see what their tax dollars paid to cover up. I voted to release the records," he added.
