The eight-day holiday of Hanukkah began December 14. What was intended as a celebration turned tragic when an attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, resulted in 16 fatalities and approximately 40 injuries.
Two gunmen, identified as a father and son, were responsible for the attack. The father was killed while his son is currently in custody. Because of this, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese characterized the incident as an act of antisemitic terrorism.
Australia is home to an estimated 117,000 Jews. Reports indicate that antisemitic incidents in the country have increased during the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Arizona’s Response
Arizona lawmakers have issued statements responding to the attack. Representatives Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ) and Greg Stanton (D-AZ) expressed solidarity with the Jewish community and condemned the violence.
"I unequivocally condemn the vile terrorist attack in Australia that targeted the Jewish community on the first night of Hanukkah. Jews worldwide should never have to fear practicing their faith, gathering as community, or celebrating their holidays," Hamadeh shared.
"My heart is with the Jewish community as they mourn, heal, and stand strong in the face of this evil. We will not allow terror or hatred to dim the light of Hanukkah or the enduring strength of the Jewish people," he added.
Stanton called the attack "appalling," writing on social media, "The antisemitic terrorist attack at a Sydney Hanukkah festival is appalling. Jews should feel safe to practice their faith without any fear of violence." "May the memories of those lost be a blessing. And as Jewish communities light the Hanukkah candles tonight, may we all find light in the darkness," he continued.
Continued Efforts
Additionally, Stanton celebrated the beginning of the Jewish Holiday with Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Rabbi Blotner from the Chabad Jewish Center, recognizing "what the holiday season is about: resilience, community, and joy."
Hanukkah continues through December 22.
Australian authorities are working to enhance security measures for the Jewish community.
Arizona officials are also showing solidarity with the community, wanting to ensure the safety to practice the religion.
