Arizona State University hosted a vigil this week to honor the life of Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was assassinated on September 10th. The event drew approximately 7,000 attendees to Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, demonstrating the significant impact Kirk had on young conservatives.
The vigil, organized by Arizona State University's College Republicans and Turning Point USA chapters, highlighted Kirk's unique role in shaping young conservatives across America.
Troy Holderby, president of College Republicans at ASU and a sophomore studying mathematics, captured the sentiment of many attendees.
"He is the cornerstone of the Generation Z conservative movement," Holderby said. "He really is the foundation for everything that I think we're going to see coming in the future."
The event featured several prominent speakers, including Turning Point Action Chief Operating Officer Tyler Bowyer, 2018 Winter Olympian Anthony Watson, and conservative activist Jack Posobiec.
Each attendee received commemorative MAGA hats featuring both the American flag and Turning Point's logo, while organizers encouraged voter registration.
Following the event's massive turnout, Tyler Bowyer took to social media, emphasizing "Arizona loves Charlie Kirk," reflecting the deep connection Kirk had forged with Arizona's conservative community.
Kirk's death comes at a time when data suggests a significant shift in young voter preferences.
According to a Yale Youth Poll conducted by the Yale Institution for Social and Political Studies, voters aged 18 to 21 now lean Republican by 11.7 points when asked about their preferences for the 2026 Congressional elections, while voters aged 22 to 29 still favor Democrats by 6.4 points.
This generational divide reflects Kirk's targeted approach to reaching younger Americans.
In April, Kirk had a goal, and he emphasized it by stating, "Gen-Z, you are the first generation in history to be worse off than your parents. But Gen-Z is quickly becoming the most conservative generation in history."
Multiple reports from 2024 and 2025 indicate that this trend is real, with significant increases in Republican support among younger Generation Z. The shift appears driven by economic frustrations and sophisticated social media outreach efforts, many of which are looked up to by organizations like Kirk's Turning Point USA.
The vigil at ASU demonstrated that Kirk's influence extends far beyond his organization.
While Turning Point USA is known for its specific approach with college chapters following directives from leadership, Kirk's personal connection with young conservatives created a movement that appears to continue growing even after his death.
As thousands of young conservatives gathered Monday night to honor Kirk's memory, they also seemed to be cementing their commitment to the political movement he helped create.
