Nexstar Media Group, Inc. announced it will preempt ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! across its owned and partner stations, citing host Jimmy Kimmel’s recent remarks about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The decision, effective immediately, means Kimmel’s show will be replaced with alternative programming in all Nexstar-operated ABC markets, which include 23 affiliate stations nationwide.
"Mr. Kimmel's comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse," said Andrew Alford, President of Nexstar's broadcasting division. "We do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located."
Kimmel had addressed Kirk’s assassination during the Monday and Tuesday broadcasts of his show, saying, “Many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk.” The remarks sparked immediate backlash from conservative figures and media outlets.
“Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue,” Alford added.
Official Reactions
The move drew swift reactions across the political spectrum. Congressman Andy Biggs responded to the situation on social media, sharing his support. “Good. Actions have consequences,” Biggs shared.
President Donald Trump also weighed in, writing, “Great News for America: The ratings-challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to [ABC] for finally having the courage to do what had to be done..."
Although ABC has not officially canceled the show, it has been suspended indefinitely following Nexstar’s announcement. Currently, Jimmy Kimmel Live! remains on the ABC lineup in markets not owned by Nexstar.
Kimmel, who has hosted the late-night show since 2003, has not yet issued a response to the controversy.
