Lawmakers are condemning a recent antisemitic attack in Boulder, Colorado, against pro-Israeli demonstrators rallying in support of efforts to release the remaining hostages in Gaza.
During the rally, Mohamed Sabry Soliman approached and began setting protestors and nearby areas on fire after shouting “Free Palestine!”
Soliman’s attacks left eight injured with no reported deaths.
The attacks are the latest major incident of antisemitic violence to occur in the last two weeks.
A similar attack recently unfolded in Washington, D.C., where a gunman murdered a couple working for the Israeli embassy and shouted words in support of Palestine after the incident.
According to White House officials, Soliman was an illegal alien who overstayed his tourist visa during former President Joe Biden’s administration.
Lawmakers condemned the attacks and called for increased protection of the Jewish community in the US.
“This was a targeted antisemitic terrorist attack against innocent, pro-Israel activists calling for every hostage to be returned home, and it’s a continuation of an alarming increase in violence against our Jewish community,” said Senator Rick Scott (R-FL).
Similarly, Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) defined the attack as a “deliberate act of terrorism against Jews.”
“This was a deliberate act of terrorism against Jews that we cannot tolerate or allow to be normalized,” statedRepresentative Schultz. “We must do all we can to fight antisemitism & ensure those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.”
State Secretary Marco Rubio condemned the attacks, stating “terror has no place in our country.”
The attacks are the latest of reportedly increasing antisemitic incidents.
According to Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reports, since January 2020, there have been 16 terrorist plots or attacks targeting Jews or Jewish institutions in the U.S., nine of which occurred within the past 11 months.
Such attacks, claimed ADL, have also been increasing throughout the world.
ADL CEO and National Director Jonathan Greenblatt urged the public to “Stop excusing antisemitic rhetoric. Stop platforming anti-Zionist hate. Stop equivocating when Jews are attacked.”
