Incoming House Speaker JD Mesnard has begun to speak about what the legislative priorities will be for AZ House Republicans when the legislature sits in January and has some thoughts on how he will run things. At a speech to the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce on December 9th, Mesnard shared some thoughts on the upcoming legislative session.
For starters, Mesnard wants to reform the way the Arizona House does business. He has already instituted a "time clock on voting", and wants to ensure that debate time on the floor is used more efficiently. He says he's already discussed procedural reforms with Democrats and they appear receptive. Mesnard says the reforms are ained at "wasting less time" and “making floor debates be a more efficient use of our time.”
On the legislative side Mesnard went on the Arizona Sunday shows to discuss a rollback of the controversial Proposition 206. Mesnard also commented on his past support of the very controversial proposal of National Popular Vote which he now says he "won't be bringing back", and the overall election results and Washington politics with an incoming Republican President.
When asked point blank what his top legislative priorities will be Mesnard answered:
We gotta adress the pension issue because of a State Supreme Court Ruling...Education is going to continue to be a top priority, right out of the gate you're going to be seeing a discussion on building and maintenance as well as full-day kindergarden and classroom spending in general.
